Product Details

Sew it yourself! The Sailrite® Sail Pack Kit allows you to create your own sail pack mainsail cover. A sail pack mainsail cover (also known as a Stack Pack®, Lazy Pack or Mack Pack®) is a popular upgrade to a standard mainsail cover. It works in conjunction with lazy jacks to make dousing and covering the mainsail quick and easy. Simply lower the sail and zip the tops of the cover panels shut using a zipper control line. The two halves of the cover attach below the foot of the sail with webbing straps and Twist-Lock fasteners to secure the cover in place.

This sail pack mainsail cover integrates with a lazy jack system (not included) to support the top of the sail pack and guide the sail neatly into place inside the cover. The design includes sleeves for Schedule 40 PVC 3/4-inch pipe (not included) to support the tops of each cover half along their lengths. The opening between the lazy jack-supported pipes stays open when the sail is lowered, allowing it to be neatly tucked away. The cover features a large #12 molded tooth zippered closure across the top, with hardware for a zipper slider control line for easy opening and closing. The zipper at the aft end is covered with canvas to protect it from the elements and extend its life. The forward edge along the mast includes a boot that zips on and off vertically, reducing wind flogging of the cover sides.

The sail pack system is compatible with mainsails that have slugs or slides on the luff. While sails with full-length battens promote proper flaking and work well with this system, the kit also accommodates sails with standard battens.

If you have a loose-footed sail or no slugs on the foot of your sail, the tutorial video demonstrates how to accommodate the webbing straps. However, slides or slugs are preferable for convenient gaps along the foot of the sail for connecting the cover halves. For loose-footed sails, additional materials must be purchased. Refer to the video for guidance.

To select the correct sail pack kit for your boat, measure the length of the boom from the mast to its end (excluding mast width). Choose the kit with a length equal to or greater than the length of your boom.

Maximum Flaked Stack Height

The maximum circumference of the sail stack at its highest point can be no more than 98 inches. (Measure from the foot of the sail to the center of the sail stack at the top and back around. Do not include the boom in this measurement.)

What if my circumference stack measurement is more than 98 inches?

An additional “wedge” panel will need to be cut and sewn to the top of both side panels using a semi-flat felled seam. Additional fabric will need to be ordered for this wedge (order one extra yard of 60-inch-wide Sattler Marine Grade Fabric per every 5 inches of additional circumference distance over the 98 inches).

When sailing, ensure the lazy jacks are tensioned to support the sail pack with minimal flogging and without disrupting the sail. After dousing the sail and closing the pack, use a topping lift or boom support/vang/kicker to bear the full weight of the boom. Adjust the lazy jacks with sufficient tension to support the PVC pipes and prevent the jack lines from slapping.

Select your boom size and fabric color from the drop-down menu. Instructions are available only in video format; you’ll find the video instructions in the “Videos” tab on this page. We recommend using the Sailrite® Sail Pack Boom Bracket (#126682) to support the aft end of the sail pack, though it is sold separately. Without the bracket, the cover will still function but may sag and appear loose at the narrow aft end. Alternatively, tying the aft end to a topping lift can substitute for the bracket, if available or preferred.

Approximate construction time is 8 hours.
